  • Oregon was a key destination for pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail in the 1800s, and you can still see parts of the trail today.

  • Home of Nike: Nike was founded in Oregon in 1964 by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman and is headquartered in Beaverton.

  • Strange Driving Laws: It’s illegal to pump your own gas in most of Oregon. Gas stations employ attendants to pump fuel, a rare practice in the U.S. 

  • Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, grew up in Portland, and many of the show’s characters are named after Portland streets and landmarks.

  • Oregon has more ghost towns than any other U.S. state, with many abandoned mining and logging towns scattered throughout.
